Testing Anxiety

Testing anxiety thwarts one's ability to complete in-class assignments and assessments to the best of his or her ability. Therefore, your grades do not accurately show your abilities. The main question/dilemma that I want you to think about while reading is: how does someone overcome this anxiety, so that they can be properly assessed?

In order to answer that question you must understand how you learn. As stated in previous Blogs, as a C.S. student you must become familiar with your disability in order to overcome it. Please make sure while you are reading, parallel the material to personal experience.

Please read the following article "Overcoming Test Anxiety" on the Study Guides and Strategies website. This week's Blog assignment is to write about a personal experience with testing anxiety.

There are two different assignments. Please read below carefully and choose which category you fall under.

1. If you DO have testing anxiety write about what it feels like. Describe a situation when you experienced testing anxiety.
2. If you DO NOT have testing anxiety please write a paragraph suggesting how to overcome testing anxiety

    In this weeks blog I will be writing about a time in my education life where I had test anxiety. A long, long time ago back in 8th grade, I was told that in my social studies class we will be having a final exam which was in 2 weeks. As everyone knows I could be the biggest procrastinator. So of course I choose to wait to study until the last 3 days for maybe the biggest exam in my life. Once I remember I have to start studying, I am about to cry and I am about to have a breakdown because I don’t know what I should do, because there is no way I can pass with 3 days of studying. So I decide to cancel out all my social life for those 3 days and just study from night to day. Also I went to extra help after school and before school every day for those three days. Finally on my last night I studied all night and got 5 hours of sleep, which was stupid to take an exam with out sleep. Finally I took the test and felt really uncomfortable and didn’t know what to do, but I finally finished, it felt like forever. Finally 1 week later I got the test back and I got a 90%! I was so happy for myself and knew that I would never put myself in that situation again. That is my test anxiety story.

  2. In this weeks blog i will be writing about how I had major test anxiety while taking my first history test at pennington my freshmen year. I remember I walked into Mr. Easons classroom and was so scared. It wasn't only me that was scared because it was the midterm but I believe that I had the most anxiety. I took the test and god stuck on the essay questions for a very long time. Then I remember what my Dad had always told me but being me, so reluctant to listen I stayed on the same problem. I then thought looked over the other problems and I knew them. After I finished the questions I knew, I remembered the answers to the question that I was stuck on. The moral of my story is not to skip problems and revise but to find problems you already know and save the hardest for last. If you forget skip it and come back i am positive you will remember it.

  3. For me, testing anxiety is not always an issue. If I am prepared for the test I will not worry about it and I will be fine through out the whole test. If I am not prepared, it will take me forever to take the test and I will have a lot of anxiety. There is a simple way to deal with this and that is to make sure I always give my self plenty of time to prepare for the test and I will be fine. One time when I was not fine even after I studied was in Dr. Boyojin’s class. I studied and made note-cadres on what he said the test was going to be on. When I went in to start taking the test I was fine because I felt prepared, but when I saw the test I became worried. It was deferent material then what I had studied and a lot more was on the test then he said would be. I ended up not doing well. I learned if I had gone to extra help I would have probably known what was on the test.

  4. Although I am a student who does not suffer from testing anxiety, I will admit I have become nervous before some tests. In my own words I can say I am a sort of hybrid in the sense that I don’t have the problem, but I have experienced it before. The feeling I felt before the test was certainly debilitating. Fortunately enough, not having the full on anxiety gives me a different prospective on the situation. I have a motto that testing anxiety falls under. “If you go into a situation with a grim attitude (whether it is a fight or a test) you will almost damn yourself from the beginning. Going in with a good attitude will allow you to feel In control and able bodied to perform your task”. In my opinion the best way to combat testing anxiety would be being prepared, rested and having confidence in yourself while going into the test.
